Dear Some White Lady:

Dear “Some White Lady:”

Thank you sooooo much for the comments you left on the blog tonite. You literally made my nite ;) I guess the verdict is in. White people do have cousins. Now it’s time to let the world know!!!

Tee hee ;) It’s always fun to get an unexpected comment on an old blog. I busted out laughing just from reading your username. I may have to give you Alan’s contact info. I think you guys would hit it off. Sounds like you have a lot in common ;)

Ahhh…. some days y’all do the work for me ;)

Wrapped up in Howard — a great Christmas idea

Since I was feeling all Howard U. lovey-dovey ;), I thought I’d post a photo of my HU t-shirt quilt. My mom jacked me for all my Howard t-shirts a few years ago and had this made for me for Christmas. At first I kinda missed my shirts, but then I realized I’d still have them forever… Plus it was pretty fun trying to replace them ;)

Patsy Howard is the woman that made the quilt for me. She has a website: http://www.pshquilts.com/. And she can take any collection of t-shirts you have and make you a beautiful quilt of just about any size. Mine fits my queen bed! They make amazing Christmas gifts… Just a suggestion ;)

“May see me in DC at Howard’s Homecoming…”

Ahhh… The Notorious B.I.G. immortalized Howard University’s homecoming in the posthumously-released hip-hop classic (can we call this a classic?… Has it been long enough?…) Kick in the Door because really, there’s nothing in the world like it! Yesterday was the culmination of Howard’s week-long homecoming celebration. And if you’ve never been to a Black college homecoming, I suggest you do it before it’s too late!

I graduated from Howard a few years ago ;). And I love and appreciate my alma mater more today than I did when I was a student. With a 141-year legacy of educating some of the brightest, most progressive minds and talents from all over the African diaspora, Howard is one of (and I only say “one of” because I don’t wanna start an e-fight :) the greatest Historically Black Universities in the nation. I actually used to work as a recruiter for Howard’s Office of Admissions and it was my job to travel around the country telling people how great Howard is, educating them about the opportunities the University offers, and sharing my experiences as a student and an employee. I traveled to Oklahoma City and Memphis, New Orleans, Boston and Anchorage… and no matter where I went, people came out… they signed up for my information sessions… because they knew about and respected my university. It was an amazingly validating experience AND I got paid for it. Life was good.

Thousands of Howard alumni, as well as folks who attended other schools or just happen to live in the DMV area come out for the festivities. When I was younger, homecoming meant a week of non-stop partying, attending fashion and comedy shows and poetry slams and pageants, but as I’ve gotten older, it’s become more about catching up with old classmates, meeting their families, and reminiscing on what will always be one of the greatest periods of our lives…

But I still party a little ;)

Here are a few snapshots from my weekend:

roaddawgs_1.jpg

These are my girls Christina and Keisha a.k.a. Kellz. We have a photo of the three of us from every homecoming we attended as students and alumni. I was looking back at some of them this morning. My, my, my how we’ve changed ;)

Me and my boy KG. You may remember him as one of the assailants in the underground video classic Ghetto Superstar.

The fabulous DWJ with her godson (another one of our HU friends’ son), Ajani. I remember when his mom was pregnant with him. Now he’s seven and super duper adorable. Man…

And this is me, X-Tina and Kellz again. See, told you we still partied a little ;)

Hysterical Ladies

This is me with fabulous lady comics Desiree Burch (Hysterical Festival producer), Retta, Jiwon Lee, Aparna Nancherla, and Diana Saez.

Headlining the Hysterical Festival’s Ambiguously Brown Comedy Hour show was Retta, who I’ve been a huge fan of for years. I hadn’t been doing comedy long when I saw her Comedy Central Presents a few years ago. But I remember thinking, “If she has a special on Comedy Central, there is a place for me in this industry.” Really. She’s super smart — a lot more of a storyteller than just a set-up/punch kind of comic and just laugh out loud hilarious. Heart her ;) Jiwon Lee was the only other comic I didn’t know prior to the show and she is hysterical. Check her out. Aparna and Diana are my DC homies, although D defected to NYC about a year ago ;( I wish I could have stayed for the entire festival. But from the looks of things Desiree and her team did an awesome job! Sisterly love. It’s a beautiful thing ;) Can’t wait til next year.

Georgetown show flyer… I’m on my way ;)

georgetown_comedy.gif

OK, I’m only posting this because it’s the coolest promo poster I’ve ever seen with my face on it… But maybe that’s because it doesn’t look like my face ;) Tee hee ;) YAY Georgetown!!! No disrespect, but I did a show at Shepherd University last year and they had some construction paper on an easel that said “Comedian” with an arrow pointing to the door of the building. No room. Just hey… go inside and she’ll be in there somewhere. :) I now understand that signage is directly proportional to your cache as a performer. A few more TV spots and I might get an actual photograph of me on a flyer! Tee hee ;)

Just kidding, Danielle! This poster *is* bad ass. Looking forward to seeing all the Georgetown folks next Thursday and the Pitt folks next Friday. Wonder what that flyer looks like. I’m working that show with Tony Woods and Tony Rock. I’ll be grateful if it says “hosted by some chick” ;)

I’m not even gonna hate

So I just received the photo below via e-mail from someone whose friend took the photo at a Palin rally this morning.

I wanted to be angry, but I totally couldn’t ;) Because even though — in my opinion — the message and intent of this sign are potentially inflammatory and completely at odds with what I believe to be true, I cannot deny that it made me chuckle.

palin_rally.jpg

During the 2000 presidential election fiasco when I worked for CNN, we would set up camp each morning in front of the Supreme Court waiting for a decision and recording the daily protests and the loonies that participated in them. If I had a scanner, I’d post some of those photos for y’all. OH THE COSTUMES! One woman came out every day with her toddler covered in three-hole-punch paper — he was a dimpled chad. Another guy dressed up as “The Gore-inch who tried to steal the election” — complete with full-on green body paint. I am so serious… Although I was on the other side of the argument I couldn’t help but laugh at some of the stuff they came up with.

Funny is funny. And as a comic, I cannot hate.

Free show TONITE at the Baltimore Comedy Factory

 diversity_nbc.jpg

Tonite I’ll be part of a very cool (and very FREE) show at The Comedy Factory in Baltimore.

NBC, in conjunction with their Stand-up for Diversity Initiative, is hosting a showcase of some of the best comics in the area tonite (Oct. 13) at the Baltimore Comedy Factory. It’s the semifinal round of their annual contest and the grand prize is a biggie!!! THE SHOW IS FREE, so come out tonite at 8 pm to see some of the hottest comics from MD, DC, Philly, etc.  We need behinds in the seats plus it’ll be a great show — hahaha… and even if it weren’t gonna be a great show, what are you gonna do? Ask for your money back ;)

I participated in this competition last year and made it to this same ‘semfinal’ round in NYC but didn’t advance to the finals. So I’m crossing my fingers I’ll do better this year ;)

Hope to see some of y’all out tonite!!! Here are the deets:
