“We gotta hold on to what we got. Doesn’t make a difference if we’re naked or not.”

When I was a kid, that’s what I thought Bon Jovi was saying in Livin on a Prayer. I heard it this morning on my iPod and I started cracking up, remembering the day–many, many years after the song came out–that one of my friends called me out on my rendition. Sure the lyrics I was singing didn’t make sense but like they say on Def Jam, I just thought “these white folks is crazy.”

Any of y’all have any crazy song lyric misinterpretations, comment and let me know. It always makes me feel better to hear what someone else got wrong. Well yeah, i thought he said “naked or not” but at least I knew…

Go head, leave a message.

As a matter of fact I do Erin…Remember when Mariah Carey and Boys II Men came out with “One Sweet Day”? Well, I made mention to my niece how “that new song is so sad and to the point!” You know the words…

And I know you’re shining down on me from Heaven
Like so many friends we’ve lost along the way
And I know eventually we’ll be together

Needless to say my niece quickly corrected me and let me know the title of the song:-)

Remember Queen Latifah UNITY? Her lyrics were … UNITY, YOU GOTTA LET EM KNOW YOU’RE NOT A BITCH OR A HO.

For years I thought she said… UNITY, YOU GOTTA LET EM KNOW YOU’RE NOT A BITCH YOU’RE A HO!

I was singing it one day and a friend corrected me. I always wondered how being a bitch was better than being a ho. MY BAD!

One of my favorites: Stevie Wonder’s, “Boogie on Reggae Woman…”

I’d like to see you nude under the stars above…
I’d like to see you in the raw under the stars above…

I used to think, “did he say that?” in those days of tame, relatively uncontroversial lyrics (pre-Prince and “Head” remember that one?). Then I realized, sure, Stevie would like to see — period. If he’s gonna see something worthwhile under the stars…might as well be that!
