Me and Stace

Tonight my friend Stacey and I attended a workshop on how to make organic body scrubs and lotions. It was held at Greater Goods DC and was taught by the super cute Kristina Libby who owns an organic body and skin care line called For the Love of… (also here) Besides being a super fun nite out, half the proceeds of the class go to Susan G. Komen Foundation. Kristina donates a portion of the proceeds of all her sales to a different women’s charity each month. How much do you heart her?

Kristina!

Kristina!

All that said, when Kristina was talking about all the yucky products and toxins we put into and on our bodies on a daily basis, I felt like that sinner in church — that Christmas-and-Easter-only-Christian — who feels like the pastor is preaching directly to them… I assumed that most of the other people there were also organically-minded, but I gotta admit that the “how to make your own lotion and body scrub” part was more appealing to me than the “organic” part. I respect people who care enough about their bodies and the earth to buy only green/organic products. But I haven’t yet jumped on that wagon. The organic eating might be more expensive but damn it if making my own skin and body care products wouldn’t save money. Equilibrium, people. Very appealing…

We learned how to use organic sugar and a few other items to create scrubs and how to make our own lotion and then we scented them with organic oils. Hello??? Heavenly. Anyone who knows me, or has walked by my front door (haha ;)  knows that I swear by aromatherapy. I used to work at Origins and am constantly burning incense, oils or candles. Needless to say I was very proud of both my scrub and my lotion.

My scrub is the BIZNESS!!! You're so jealous.

I must also mention that it’s really good lotion. Take it from me — if it can tame my left elbow… My scrub was a mix of cinnamon and orange. And my lotion was sandalwood and cinnamon. It was super easy to make and I’d love to commit to making my own products from here on out. But let’s be honest people. That’s not going to happen. Stace and I did talk though about having some parties of our own — just the girls — where we show the rest of our friends how cool and earthy we are now!

Anywayz, you should totally check out Kristina’s products and if you’re in DC, check out Greater Goods too. They have lots of very cool FREE classes on green[er] living. I really enjoyed myself tonite and I’m totally in favor of saving the planet. Cause I really like it here. So I want to do more. Maybe this marks the first step on my green journey. Next step, rent “An Inconvenient Truth” or maybe that flick Leo was pushing. I still haven’t seen either of those. Is Leo actually in the movie? Because I feel like if you’re gonna watch a film about how the planet is in ruins, there should at least be a hottie in it.

Hahaha… miss the point much?

Erin, I’m so glad you came out and enjoyed the class! It was great to meet all of you. :) I’ll be teaching another class next month. Hopefully, I’ll see you then.

    Best,
    Kristina

PS: If you want me to create a “how to” box with all the ingredients you’ll need for your party, it would be pretty easy for me to do!
