Guitar Hero and the stripper bat signal

Just got back from a road trip to Peoria, IL where I worked at Jukebox Comedy Club. Had some great shows, got some work accomplished, got to see an old friend. Great weekend all in all.

I discovered Guitar Hero this weekend — kind of like Columbus discovered America. Tee hee ;) The first nite we got into town good bud Roy Wood, Jr. and I found a Best Buy and he showed me how to play. I was instantly hooked and begged him to take me back every day. This is Day #2 ;) 11:00 a.m. on a weekday — the store was empty. We played G.H. and Wii golf for like an hour and a half. It was awesome ;)

There was a strip club next door to the club. I think the name of the club was Fantasyland. They had a big three-lamp search light in the strip club parking lot. I joked on stage about it being a stripper bat signal. I remember making a drunken remark something like, “Holy clear platform stripper heels, Batman!” Haha… Good times. After one of our Friday shows, some of the ladies came over to invite the folks leaving our show to come see them dance. Not certain that was the best marketing plan, but hey whatevs… I couldn’t resist taking a photo.

P.S. I still don’t know how in the hell they walk in those shoes.

One of my favorite friends from college, Montrelle, drove down from Chicago to come see a show. It’s been years since I saw him so I was super excited.

We hung out after the late Saturday show and ran into some extremely racist lesbians. Some very awkward conversations ensued. Future material for sure…

If you read the entry below, you’ll see how my trip home went… But I’m not gonna let that retroactively ruin my weekend. Hope y’all had a great one too!

EJ Out.

These are a few of my [new] favorite things…

No, I’m not channeling Oprah, and I know most of y’all don’t come here for my shopping advice ;) but I ran across a few things today that I really wanted to share with you… It’s Sunday again, and in addition to feeding my football habit, Sundays also mean my weekly trip to Eastern Market. I skipped the early games today, but I am planning to watch Dallas/NYG later… since I don’t have NFL Sunday Ticket and can’t see the Eagles game ;(

Is there anyway both of those teams could lose?… ‘Cause that would be ideal.

This week I took the fabulous DWJ with me. She’s not a regular market-goer, but I’m trying to ruin her and get her addicted ;) D runs an awesome blog about accessories called The Art of Accessories. If you haven’t already, please check her out! Her blog is perfect for girly-girls and fashionistas and even girly-girl wannabes like me! I’ve known D since sophomore or junior year at Howard. I think she initially saw me as a ‘project’ a’ la Tai in the movie Clueless. Ten years later, she’s finally begun to rub off on me ;) Tee hee ;)

One of the first stops we made was to this booth that had these amazing handbags made out of old book covers. Sounds funky, right? Well wait ’til you see ’em! I immediately saw one that I thought would be perfect for D… and then right next to it, there was a bag made out of the cover of an old Bible and it was screaming my name. Please see below:

Who you are when no one is looking

norway1.jpg

photo courtesy of: The Ladner Report

Hey y’all, my mom just forwarded me this post yesterday so it’s obviously been floating around since at least the beginning of the month and I’m probably hecka late, but I feel like it’s a story worth forwarding — especially when there are so many baseless, negative e-mails about Senator Obama floating around…

Here’s the synopsis: About 20 years ago, there was a young newlywed at an airport on her way to meet her new husband who had flown to their new home in Norway ahead of her. When she got to the counter she was told she’d have to pay a $100 fee in order to bring her second bag on board. She had no money and no one to call for help. But the man standing behind her in line offered to pay for her bag so she could bring all her belongings with her on her trip. Continue reading →

Wrapped up in Howard — a great Christmas idea

Since I was feeling all Howard U. lovey-dovey ;), I thought I’d post a photo of my HU t-shirt quilt. My mom jacked me for all my Howard t-shirts a few years ago and had this made for me for Christmas. At first I kinda missed my shirts, but then I realized I’d still have them forever… Plus it was pretty fun trying to replace them ;)

Patsy Howard is the woman that made the quilt for me. She has a website: http://www.pshquilts.com/. And she can take any collection of t-shirts you have and make you a beautiful quilt of just about any size. Mine fits my queen bed! They make amazing Christmas gifts… Just a suggestion ;)

“May see me in DC at Howard’s Homecoming…”

Ahhh… The Notorious B.I.G. immortalized Howard University’s homecoming in the posthumously-released hip-hop classic (can we call this a classic?… Has it been long enough?…) Kick in the Door because really, there’s nothing in the world like it! Yesterday was the culmination of Howard’s week-long homecoming celebration. And if you’ve never been to a Black college homecoming, I suggest you do it before it’s too late!

I graduated from Howard a few years ago ;). And I love and appreciate my alma mater more today than I did when I was a student. With a 141-year legacy of educating some of the brightest, most progressive minds and talents from all over the African diaspora, Howard is one of (and I only say “one of” because I don’t wanna start an e-fight :) the greatest Historically Black Universities in the nation. I actually used to work as a recruiter for Howard’s Office of Admissions and it was my job to travel around the country telling people how great Howard is, educating them about the opportunities the University offers, and sharing my experiences as a student and an employee. I traveled to Oklahoma City and Memphis, New Orleans, Boston and Anchorage… and no matter where I went, people came out… they signed up for my information sessions… because they knew about and respected my university. It was an amazingly validating experience AND I got paid for it. Life was good.

Thousands of Howard alumni, as well as folks who attended other schools or just happen to live in the DMV area come out for the festivities. When I was younger, homecoming meant a week of non-stop partying, attending fashion and comedy shows and poetry slams and pageants, but as I’ve gotten older, it’s become more about catching up with old classmates, meeting their families, and reminiscing on what will always be one of the greatest periods of our lives…

But I still party a little ;)

Here are a few snapshots from my weekend:

roaddawgs_1.jpg

These are my girls Christina and Keisha a.k.a. Kellz. We have a photo of the three of us from every homecoming we attended as students and alumni. I was looking back at some of them this morning. My, my, my how we’ve changed ;)

Me and my boy KG. You may remember him as one of the assailants in the underground video classic Ghetto Superstar.

The fabulous DWJ with her godson (another one of our HU friends’ son), Ajani. I remember when his mom was pregnant with him. Now he’s seven and super duper adorable. Man…

And this is me, X-Tina and Kellz again. See, told you we still partied a little ;)

Georgetown show flyer… I’m on my way ;)

georgetown_comedy.gif

OK, I’m only posting this because it’s the coolest promo poster I’ve ever seen with my face on it… But maybe that’s because it doesn’t look like my face ;) Tee hee ;) YAY Georgetown!!! No disrespect, but I did a show at Shepherd University last year and they had some construction paper on an easel that said “Comedian” with an arrow pointing to the door of the building. No room. Just hey… go inside and she’ll be in there somewhere. :) I now understand that signage is directly proportional to your cache as a performer. A few more TV spots and I might get an actual photograph of me on a flyer! Tee hee ;)

Just kidding, Danielle! This poster *is* bad ass. Looking forward to seeing all the Georgetown folks next Thursday and the Pitt folks next Friday. Wonder what that flyer looks like. I’m working that show with Tony Woods and Tony Rock. I’ll be grateful if it says “hosted by some chick” ;)

An understandable mistake

gargle.gif

This morning I gargled with Mr. Clean w/ Febreze. And no this wasn’t some “Take me with you, M.C.” statement as a result of his passing. The color and the bottle kinda resembled my Family Size Arctic Mint Listerine. They were both on my bathroom counter, I was half-sleep, and I hadn’t put my contacts in yet.

YUCK!

Cool new blog: This Week in Blackness

twib1.gif

So some of my NYC buds (Elon James White, Baron Vaughn and Reese Waters) started a new blog called This Week in Blackness. So hilarious. They haven’t been up for long, but there are some really funny features on there. My favorite is “IS THIS RACIST – with Baron Vaughn” — a must read for sure ;) Check it out and submit some of your own questions. It’s all in fun and I am willing to guarantee that you will holler at the response he posts. I heart Baron. Such a funny brotha.

Support their site! But then come back here ;) No defecting allowed! tee hee ;)
